The Iowa Glaucoma Curriculum, created by Dr. Wallace L.M. Alward at the University of Iowa, remains one of the best free video-based resources for residents building a foundation in glaucoma — genuinely still active and updated as recently as 2024.

What it covers

• 50 bite-sized video lectures averaging about 14 minutes each (range 4-37 minutes) — roughly 12 hours of content in total
• Highly visual: over 900 clinical images and more than 90 video clips, spanning anatomy and physiology through medical and surgical management
• Organized into clear sections including classification of the glaucomas, gonioscopy, secondary glaucomas (e.g., exfoliation syndrome), medical therapy, laser procedures, and surgical management including MIGS

The same team maintains gonioscopy.org, the "Atlas of Gonioscopy" — a dedicated video-based teaching site covering basic and advanced gonioscopy technique (including indentation and the corneal wedge sign), with clinical video examples across the glaucoma spectrum. Well worth working through alongside the main curriculum, since gonioscopy skill is exactly the kind of exam technique that benefits from repeated visual reinforcement.

How to use it

The curriculum works well as structured self-study before clinic days — watch the relevant chapter ahead of your glaucoma sessions, then use the actual clinic time to discuss real cases rather than re-covering the basics.
