Crowns and bridges are fixed dental restorations — a crown caps a single damaged or weakened tooth to rebuild its strength and shape, while a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the neighbouring teeth.

A crown is often needed after a root canal, to protect a tooth left more fragile by the procedure, or for a tooth that's cracked, badly decayed, or heavily filled and at risk of breaking. It fits over the entire visible tooth, restoring both function and appearance.
A traditional bridge uses crowns on the healthy teeth on either side of a gap to anchor a false tooth (or teeth) in between. The supporting teeth are reshaped to receive the crowns, an impression is taken, and a temporary bridge is worn while your permanent one is custom-made to match your natural teeth.
The area is numbed before any reshaping begins, so the process itself isn't uncomfortable. After the permanent crown or bridge is fabricated to match your bite and tooth shade, it's fitted, checked carefully, and cemented into place. Most people feel completely normal within a few days.
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, crowns and bridges can last for many years to decades. Brushing and flossing around them properly matters — bacteria can still seep underneath an improperly cared-for restoration and cause problems at the tooth beneath.
