Scaling and polishing is a professional dental cleaning that removes plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth, particularly around the gumline where a toothbrush can't reach effectively — leaving a smoother surface that resists new buildup for longer.

Scaling uses an ultrasonic instrument, sometimes followed by fine hand tools, to gently loosen and remove tartar deposits from the tooth surface and just below the gumline. Polishing follows, using a rotating rubber cup with a mildly abrasive paste to smooth the tooth surface and lift surface stains, leaving teeth feeling noticeably cleaner.
For patients with healthy gums and good regular dental care, current evidence suggests routine scaling and polishing has modest clinical benefit beyond feeling clean and looking good — though patients consistently report valuing it. For patients with early or established gum disease (periodontitis), it plays a genuinely important role in reducing further attachment and tooth loss. Dr. Dhara Patel will tell you honestly which category you fall into rather than recommend cleaning on a fixed schedule regardless of your actual gum health.
Mild gum sensitivity for a day or so is normal, especially if there was significant tartar buildup. Teeth often look visibly lighter if surface staining was present, though the procedure won't change the natural intrinsic colour of your teeth — that's what teeth whitening addresses instead.
Dr. Dhara Patel assesses your actual gum health first, so cleaning frequency is based on what your mouth needs, not a generic schedule. Read more about Dr. Patel's credentials and experience.
