Understanding and managing digital eye strain from screen use

Digital Eye Strain

Computer Vision Syndrome in Ahmedabad

Computer Vision Syndrome, also called digital eye strain, describes the group of eye and vision problems that come from prolonged use of computers, phones, and other screens — and with how much time most of us now spend on devices, it's become genuinely common.

Recognising the symptoms

Common signs include blurred vision, eye fatigue, dry or irritated eyes, headaches (especially around the forehead and temples), and occasionally double vision. Symptoms tend to build up the longer you've been looking at a screen, and often ease once you stop — though frequent, prolonged screen use can make them a near-daily problem.

Why screens are harder on your eyes

Digital screens typically involve smaller text, lower contrast, and glare compared to reading on paper, all of which make your eyes work harder. We also blink noticeably less while focused on a screen, which contributes to dryness. An outdated glasses prescription — even a mild one — can make all of this worse, since your eyes are already compensating before the screen adds further strain.

The 20-20-20 rule — genuinely useful, worth an honest caveat

The most commonly recommended habit is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It's a simple way to give your focusing muscles a break and remember to blink more. Worth knowing honestly: while widely recommended by eye care organisations, controlled studies on the rule's specific measurable effects have shown mixed results — that doesn't mean it isn't worth doing, just that it's one helpful habit among several, not a guaranteed fix on its own.

What else genuinely helps

Positioning your screen slightly below eye level, reducing glare, increasing text size, and making sure your glasses prescription is current all make a real difference. If symptoms persist despite these changes, it's worth an eye exam — sometimes CVS is a signal that an underlying, correctable vision problem needs addressing.
