How to Prepare for Your Procedure

A complete checklist for cataract surgery and LASIK patients

Getting Ready

How to Prepare for Your Procedure

A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth, stress-free procedure day. Here's exactly what to do beforehand, for both cataract surgery and LASIK.

Preparing for Cataract Surgery

In the days before

  • Attend your pre-operative measurements and evaluation appointment — this determines your correct intraocular lens power, so it's not something to skip or rush
  • Tell Dr. Patel about all medications and supplements you take, including blood thinners like aspirin — some may need to be paused beforehand
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery, since your vision will be temporarily affected
  • If you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to stop wearing them for a short period before your measurements, to ensure accuracy

On the day of surgery

  • Follow any fasting instructions given to you — typically avoiding food and drink for a set number of hours beforehand
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours prior
  • Don't wear eye makeup, facial lotion, or perfume, as these can interfere with a sterile environment
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that's easy to rest in afterward
  • Bring your regular glasses, a list of current medications, and someone to drive you home

What to expect and plan for afterward

Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. Most patients resume normal light activity within a day or two, with full healing over four to six weeks. Read more about cataract surgery at Sadbhaav or browse our cataract surgery FAQ.

Preparing for LASIK

In the days before

  • Stop wearing contact lenses before your evaluation and surgery, since they temporarily alter your cornea's natural shape — soft lenses typically need at least 5 days, rigid or toric lenses at least 2 weeks; ask us for guidance specific to your lens type
  • Tell Dr. Patel about any medications you take, particularly blood thinners
  • Avoid excessive fatigue and alcohol in the days leading up to surgery
  • Arrange transport home, since driving isn't recommended immediately after the procedure

On the day of surgery

  • Avoid makeup, perfume, or hairspray, as these can interfere with the laser equipment
  • Wear comfortable clothing you can lie down in easily
  • Eat a light meal beforehand unless otherwise instructed — LASIK doesn't typically require fasting the way surgery under sedation does, but confirm with us
  • Bring someone to drive you home afterward

What to expect and plan for afterward

Vision is often noticeably clearer within a day, though mild dryness, light sensitivity, or glare are common in the early recovery period. Avoid rubbing your eyes, and follow your prescribed eye drop schedule closely. Read more about LASIK at Sadbhaav or browse our LASIK FAQ.
