Oculoplasty treats conditions affecting the eyelids, tear ducts, and the eye socket (orbit) — a distinct subspecialty of ophthalmology, since these structures directly affect both how well your eye functions and how it looks.

Ptosis is drooping of the upper eyelid, which can be present from birth or develop later in life due to aging or muscle weakness. Beyond appearance, a significantly drooping lid can genuinely obstruct your upper field of vision. Surgery tightens the eyelid muscle responsible for lifting the lid, restoring both a clearer visual field and a more alert, natural appearance.
These are opposite problems with eyelid position: entropion is when the eyelid turns inward, causing eyelashes to rub against and irritate the cornea; ectropion is when it turns outward, leading to dryness, excess tearing, and eye exposure. Both are correctable with eyelid surgery that restores proper lid positioning.
A blocked or damaged tear duct causes chronic watering or repeated infections. When conservative treatment isn't enough, a procedure to create a new drainage pathway can resolve the problem permanently.
Injuries to the eye socket or surrounding bone — from an accident or a direct blow — sometimes need surgical repair, especially if double vision or a change in eye position develops. Prompt evaluation matters here, since some orbital injuries are more straightforward to correct early.
Dr. Dhaval Patel, MD (Ophthalmology, AIIMS New Delhi), evaluates eyelid and orbital conditions for both the functional problem and the appearance concern, since with oculoplasty the two are rarely separate. Read more about Dr. Patel's credentials and experience.
