If you've ever wondered what "antibiotic drops" or "steroid drops" actually means, or why your eye drops look different from someone else's, here's a genuine explanation of the main categories.
An important note before the list: This page explains what each category of eye drop does and why a doctor might prescribe it — it is not a guide for choosing or using eye drops on your own. All of these are prescription medications for good reason: using the wrong category for your specific condition, especially steroid drops on an undiagnosed red eye, can genuinely make things worse rather than better. If you have eye symptoms, the right first step is always an examination, not self-selecting a drop based on a category that sounds close to your symptoms.
Two conditions can look outwardly similar — a red, irritated eye — while needing completely different, sometimes opposite, treatment. A viral infection treated with the wrong steroid can worsen significantly, while a genuine inflammatory condition left untreated can cause lasting damage. This is exactly why proper examination matters more than guessing from a category list, however clear it seems.
