Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed until it's more advanced. Caught early as gingivitis, it's fully reversible — left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis and eventually threaten the teeth themselves.

Healthy gums are firm and don't bleed. Red, swollen, or bleeding gums — especially during brushing or flossing — are the earliest sign something's wrong. Persistent bad breath, gums pulling away from teeth, or teeth that feel loose are signs the disease has progressed further and need prompt attention.
Gingivitis is the mild, fully reversible stage — inflammation caused by plaque buildup along the gumline, with no bone loss yet. Left untreated, bacteria spread beneath the gums and begin affecting the supporting bone, causing periodontitis: gums pull away from teeth, pockets form, and without treatment this leads to progressive bone loss and eventually loose or lost teeth.
Gingivitis usually resolves with professional cleaning and improved daily brushing and flossing. For periodontitis, deeper cleaning — scaling and root planing — removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths the tooth root to discourage further buildup. More advanced cases may need antibiotic treatment directly in the periodontal pockets, or gum surgery to restore damaged tissue.
