A phakic intraocular lens, commonly known as ICL (implantable collamer lens), is a corrective lens placed inside the eye without removing your natural lens — an option for correcting high myopia when LASIK isn't suitable, rather than a routine alternative to it.

ICL is generally considered for patients with high myopia, thin corneas, or other factors that make them unsuitable for corneal laser surgery like LASIK. Because your natural lens stays in place, the eye retains its natural ability to focus at near distances (accommodation) — an advantage over lens-removal procedures. Candidacy requires a stable prescription for at least two years and a thorough evaluation of the eye's internal measurements, including anterior chamber depth and corneal endothelial cell count.
ICL is well studied and generally considered safe and effective for appropriate candidates, with the meaningful advantage of being reversible — the lens can be removed or exchanged if needed, unlike laser corneal reshaping. That said, it is an intraocular procedure, and like any eye surgery carries real risks that need honest discussion: elevated eye pressure, cataract formation over time, and — since high myopia itself already carries elevated risk — a small increased risk of retinal detachment. This is exactly why thorough pre-surgical evaluation and realistic risk discussion matter more here than for many other procedures.
The lens is inserted through a small incision under local anaesthesia. Some patients need a small laser or surgical opening in the iris beforehand to prevent pressure buildup after the lens is placed. Recovery is generally quick, though — as with any intraocular surgery — follow-up monitoring matters for catching any pressure or other changes early.
Dr. Dhaval Patel, MD (Ophthalmology, AIIMS New Delhi), evaluates candidacy thoroughly and discusses the real risk-benefit picture honestly, rather than presenting it as a routine, risk-free procedure. Read more about Dr. Patel's credentials and experience.
