Any significant eye injury needs prompt medical attention — the eye has very little natural protection against chemicals or trauma, and how quickly you respond in the first few minutes can genuinely affect the outcome.

If a chemical gets in the eye, begin flushing with clean water immediately, before calling anyone or doing anything else. Keep the eye open while flushing, and continue for at least 15 to 20 minutes — the longer a chemical stays in contact with the eye, the more damage it causes. Remove contact lenses if you can do so without stopping the flushing. Do not rub the eye. Seek emergency care right after, and bring the chemical container or its name if you have it — this genuinely helps guide treatment.
For a small particle, blinking naturally or gently flushing with clean water sometimes clears it. Do not rub the eye or try to remove an object that's embedded or not coming out easily — this can cause more damage. If it doesn't clear or vision is affected, it needs an ophthalmologist's evaluation.
Even without a visible cut, a direct blow to the eye can cause internal damage that isn't obvious right away. Avoid pressing on the eye, and seek evaluation — especially if there's pain, reduced vision, double vision, or the eye looks visibly different from the other.
Sudden vision loss or change, a penetrating injury, a chemical burn, significant pain, or visible deformity of the eye all warrant immediate emergency evaluation — don't wait to see if it improves on its own.
