Why a proper fitting matters

Contact lenses aren't one-size-fits-all — your cornea's curvature, your tear film, and your prescription all determine which lens type and brand will genuinely suit your eyes. Dr. Dhaval Patel evaluates this properly before recommending a lens, rather than defaulting to whichever brand is easiest to sell.

Major Contact Lens Brands Available in India

  • Bausch + Lomb — a long-established brand widely trusted in India, known for lines like SofLens, PureVision, Ultra, and Biotrue, spanning daily to monthly options.
  • Johnson & Johnson (Acuvue) — globally the largest daily disposable lens maker, with popular lines like Acuvue Oasys and 1-Day Acuvue Moist, known for comfort with sensitive eyes.
  • Alcon — known for advanced hydration technology, including Dailies Total1 and Air Optix, often recommended for dry eyes or long screen hours.
  • CooperVision — known for specialty and toric lenses for more complex prescriptions, including Biofinity, Clariti, and MyDay.
  • Aqualens — a well-established Indian contact lens brand, offering daily and monthly options, along with colour lenses, at a range of price points.
  • Purecon — an Indian manufacturer offering soft, RGP, and specialty lenses (including yearly-disposable and coloured options) at budget-friendly price points, a practical choice for patients wanting a value option without compromising on fit.

Availability and pricing can change, and not every brand suits every eye — we'll help you choose based on your actual fitting, not brand marketing.

Contact Lens Wear Types Explained

Contact lenses are categorised by how often they're replaced — this affects both convenience and, genuinely, infection risk.

  • Daily disposable: A fresh, sterile lens every single day, discarded after use — no cleaning or storage needed. Generally the lowest infection risk, and a good option for occasional wearers or sensitive eyes.
  • Bi-weekly (2-week): Cleaned and stored in solution between wears, replaced every two weeks. A middle ground between cost and convenience, but requires consistent hygiene discipline.
  • Monthly: The most common reusable option — cleaned nightly and replaced monthly. More affordable per lens than daily disposables, but hygiene compliance matters even more over the longer wear period.
  • Yearly / conventional lenses: Worth an honest note here — these longer-replacement lenses do still technically exist in the market, but modern eye care generally discourages them. Less frequent replacement means more time for protein buildup and microbial contamination on the lens surface, genuinely raising infection risk compared to daily, bi-weekly, or monthly options. We don't recommend these as a first choice.

Specialty lenses for irregular corneas

Standard soft lenses don't always fit well over an irregular corneal surface, such as in keratoconus or after certain corneal surgeries. In these cases, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) or scleral lenses can provide sharper, more stable vision than soft lenses or glasses alone, since they hold their shape over the irregular cornea rather than conforming to it. This is often part of managing keratoconus alongside or after C3R treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your prescription, your eyes' tear film and oxygen needs, your lifestyle, and how consistently you're likely to follow a replacement schedule. A proper fitting — checking your cornea's curvature and your tear film — is what determines this, not just personal preference.
Not unless your specific lenses are approved for extended or overnight wear, and even then, it's generally best avoided. Sleeping in lenses not designed for it significantly increases the risk of corneal infection, since it reduces oxygen supply to the cornea overnight.
Most daily-wear lenses are designed for around 8 to 14 hours, depending on the lens and your individual eyes. Wearing them longer than recommended, especially in air-conditioned or screen-heavy environments, increases dryness and irritation risk.
It's the replacement schedule, not necessarily lens quality. Daily lenses are discarded after a single use — no cleaning or storage needed, and often the lowest infection risk. Bi-weekly and monthly lenses are cleaned and stored between wears using lens solution, and need consistent hygiene discipline to stay safe.
No — never. Tap water can carry microorganisms, including Acanthamoeba, that can cause serious, sight-threatening corneal infections. Always use proper contact lens solution specifically designed for storage and cleaning.
Mild dryness by the end of a long day is common, especially with screen use or air conditioning. Persistent redness, pain, unusual discharge, or light sensitivity is not normal and needs prompt evaluation, since it could signal an infection or a lens that isn't right for your eyes.
Yes — toric contact lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism, available across several brands in both monthly and daily options.
Generally once a year, even if your vision feels unchanged — your cornea's shape and your eyes' tolerance for lenses can shift over time, and a regular check catches problems before they become symptomatic.
