Most people see much better within a few days of cataract surgery, but some blur is normal at first, and a few people notice blur weeks, months or years later. Most causes are easy to treat. This leaflet explains what is normal, the common reasons for blur and the warning signs that need an urgent check.
Mild blur, watering, light sensitivity and a gritty feeling are common. Swelling of the clear front window of the eye (the cornea) can make vision misty for a few days, especially after a hard cataract. Vision usually improves day by day.
| Reason | When | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Glasses number still needed | Any time | New glasses after about 4–6 weeks; the lens implant corrects most but not always all of the number |
| Dry eye | Weeks | Lubricating drops; blur that clears on blinking is a clue |
| Swelling at the back of the eye (macular oedema) | Usually 4–8 weeks after surgery | Extra eye drops, sometimes an injection; usually improves |
| Cloudy capsule behind the lens (PCO, "after-cataract") | Months to years | A quick, painless laser (YAG laser) in the clinic |
| Lens implant not perfectly centred | Any time | Sometimes needs a small procedure |
| Other eye problems | Any time | Conditions such as diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration or glaucoma can limit vision |
Come to the eye clinic the same day if you have
Many people see well within a few days; vision settles fully over about 4–6 weeks.
The cataract cannot come back, but the capsule behind the lens can become cloudy months or years later. A short laser treatment clears it.
Standard lens implants are set mainly for distance or near. Most people need reading glasses, and some need a small distance correction.
No. Increasing pain, redness or worsening vision needs a same-day check.
