Amsler Grid Home Test

Check your central vision at home

The Amsler grid helps people with macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease or other macular conditions notice changes in their central vision early. It takes less than a minute.

How to use it

  1. Print the grid (it prints about 10 cm wide) and keep it in the same place, in good light.
  2. Wear your reading glasses. Hold the grid about 30–35 cm (a reading distance) from your eyes.
  3. Cover one eye and look steadily at the central dot.
  4. Without moving your eye, notice whether all the lines look straight, all the squares look equal and no part is missing or blurred.
  5. Repeat with the other eye. Check once a day or as your doctor advises.

Contact us the same day (or go to an eye emergency) if you have:

  • Lines that look wavy, bent or distorted
  • A new dark, blank or blurred patch
  • Any change from how the grid looked before

A new change can be a sign of wet macular degeneration, which is treatable but needs prompt injections to protect vision. If something looks different, contact us within a day or two, even if your next appointment is soon.

Related: age-related macular degeneration, retina treatment, eye injections.
