Dilating Eye Drops

Why your pupils are widened, and how long the blur lasts

Dilating drops widen the pupil (the black part of the eye) so the doctor can see the lens, retina and optic nerve properly. Many conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and glaucoma damage, can only be checked fully through a dilated pupil.

What to expect

  • The drops may sting for a few seconds. Dilation takes 20 to 40 minutes, a little longer in dark eyes.
  • Close-up vision becomes blurred and bright light feels dazzling.
  • In adults the effect usually lasts 4 to 6 hours. Drops used for children's glasses tests (cyclopentolate) last up to 24 hours; atropine can last a week or more.

Before your appointment

  • Do not drive to an appointment where you may be dilated. Bring someone, or use public transport or a taxi.
  • Bring sunglasses for the journey home.
  • Allow extra time: dilation adds 30 to 60 minutes to the visit.

Afterwards

  • Avoid driving, cycling and operating machinery until your vision is clear and not dazzled.
  • Reading and screen work may be difficult for a few hours.
  • You can carry on with your normal medicines and eye drops.

Go to an eye doctor immediately if

  • Your eye becomes painful and red with blurred vision, haloes around lights, headache or vomiting after dilation. In people with narrow angles, dilation can very rarely trigger acute angle closure, an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

How long does eye dilation last?

Usually 4 to 6 hours in adults. Children's drops can last up to a day.

Can I drive after my pupils are dilated?

It is not safe until your vision is clear and you are not dazzled. Bring a driver.

Can I go back to work?

Many people can, but close work and screens may be blurry for a few hours.

Is dilation necessary every time?

Not always. It depends on your condition. People with diabetes, high myopia, floaters or glaucoma usually need it regularly.
