OCT Eye Scan

A quick, painless scan of the retina and optic nerve

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses harmless light to take detailed cross-section pictures of the retina, a little like an ultrasound but with light. It can show layers just a few thousandths of a millimetre thick, and it takes only a few seconds per eye.

What OCT is used for

  • Macula: fluid in wet AMD and diabetic macular oedema, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, central serous chorioretinopathy.
  • Glaucoma: measuring the nerve fibre layer and optic disc to detect damage early and track change.
  • Monitoring treatment: deciding when injections are needed, and checking for side effects of medicines such as hydroxychloroquine.
  • OCT angiography: showing blood flow without dye. See OCT angiography.

What to expect

  1. You sit at the machine with your chin on a rest and look at a target light.
  2. The scan takes a few seconds per eye. Nothing touches the eye.
  3. Dilating drops are sometimes used for a clearer picture.
  4. The doctor explains the images with you, often at the same visit.

Tips for a good scan

  • Blink just before each scan and then keep the eye still.
  • Tell the technician if your eyes are dry; a lubricant drop can help.
  • Bring previous scan reports so changes can be compared.

Frequently asked questions

Is an OCT scan safe?

Yes. It uses low-power light, no radiation, and nothing touches the eye.

How long does an OCT scan take?

A few minutes for both eyes, including positioning.

Do I need dilating drops for OCT?

Not always. Small pupils or cataract may need dilation for a clear image.

How often do I need OCT?

It depends on the condition: monthly during injection treatment, every 6 to 12 months in glaucoma.
