Eye Ultrasound (B-scan)

Seeing inside the eye when the view is blocked

A B-scan uses sound waves to make a picture of the inside of the eye. It is used when the doctor cannot see the retina directly, for example through a dense cataract or a bleed inside the eye, and to measure lumps and swellings.

When it is used

  • Dense cataract, before surgery, to check that the retina is attached
  • Bleeding inside the eye (vitreous haemorrhage), to look for a retinal tear or detachment
  • Eye injuries, to look for a foreign body
  • Lumps inside the eye, swelling of the optic nerve, and inflammation of the eye wall

What to expect

  1. You lie back or sit, with your eyes closed.
  2. A little clear gel is put on the closed eyelid and a small probe is moved gently over it.
  3. You may be asked to look in different directions with the eye closed.
  4. It takes 5 to 15 minutes and does not hurt. The gel is wiped off afterwards.

Related measurement: A-scan

A similar ultrasound probe can measure the length of the eye (A-scan biometry) to calculate the lens power for cataract surgery when optical biometry is not possible. See biometry before cataract surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Is a B-scan painful?

No. The probe rests gently on the closed eyelid with gel.

Is ultrasound safe for the eye?

Yes. It uses sound waves, not radiation.

Can I drive after a B-scan?

Yes, unless you also had dilating drops.

Will I get the result immediately?

Usually the doctor can explain the main findings at the same visit.
