Glaucoma Eye Drops

Types, side effects and tips to remember them

Glaucoma drops lower the pressure inside the eye to protect the optic nerve. They do not improve vision, and you may not feel any difference, but using them every day as prescribed is the most important thing you can do to keep your sight.

The main types

Group (usual cap colour)ExamplesCommon side effects
Prostaglandins (teal)Latanoprost, travoprost, bimatoprost; once at nightRed eye, longer darker lashes, darkening of the iris (permanent) and eyelid skin
Beta-blockers (yellow)TimololCan slow the pulse and worsen asthma: tell your doctor about heart or breathing problems
Alpha-agonists (purple)BrimonidineAllergy with red itchy eyes, dry mouth, tiredness; not for young children
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (orange)Dorzolamide, brinzolamideStinging, bitter taste
Rho-kinase inhibitorsNetarsudilRedness, small bleeds on the white of the eye
Combinations (dark blue if they contain a beta-blocker)Two drugs in one bottleAs for each drug; fewer drops to remember

Cap colours follow an American system and are not always the same in India; always read the label. See eye drop cap colour codes.

Using drops correctly

  • Wash hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid and let one drop fall into the pocket. One drop is enough.
  • Close the eye and press gently on the inner corner for 1 to 2 minutes. This keeps more medicine in the eye and reduces side effects in the body.
  • If you use more than one drop, wait 5 minutes between different drops.
  • See our step-by-step how to put eye drops guide.

Remembering your drops

  • Link drops to a daily habit such as brushing your teeth.
  • Set a phone alarm or use our printable eye drop timetable.
  • If your hands shake or you cannot aim, ask about drop aids (bottle holders that help aim and squeeze) or ask a family member to help.
  • Take drops with you when travelling, and bring all your bottles to every appointment.

Do

  • Tell every doctor you see that you use glaucoma drops.
  • Order refills before you run out.

Don't

  • Don't stop drops because the eye feels fine: glaucoma damage is silent.
  • Don't share drops or use them after the expiry date, or more than 4 weeks after opening unless the label says otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What if I miss a dose?

Use it when you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double up.

Do glaucoma drops have to be used for life?

Usually yes, unless laser or surgery controls the pressure. Never stop without advice.

My eyes are red with the drops. Should I stop?

Mild redness is common with some drops. Speak to your doctor; there are alternatives and preservative-free options.

Can I use glaucoma drops with contact lenses?

Remove lenses before drops and wait 15 minutes before putting them back, unless the drop is preservative-free.
