Intermittent Fasting and Benefits on an Eye

What is Intermittent Fasting (IF) or Intemittent Energy Restriction (IER) ?

Intermittent fasting, which is also referred to as intermittent energy restriction, is a dietary intervention that involves alternating periods of unrestricted eating with periods of restricted eating for a specific duration. The objective of this approach is to impact the body's metabolism through controlled periods of food consumption.

Weindruch and Sohal showed that calorie restriction strategies might prolong lifespan by reducing body weight and oxidative stress. Subsequent studies have extended its beneficial effects to other aspects, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting for an Eye

  • Intermittent Fasting Lowers Blood Pressure and Improves the Ocular Blood Supply

  • Most studies have shown a significant decrease in IOP values during IF.

  • Intermittent Fasting and Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Intermittent Fasting Suppresses the Diabetic Retinopathy Inflammatory Response

Intermittent Fasting Inhibits Abnormal Capillary Neogenesis in Diabetic Retinopathy

Intermittent Fasting Improves Diabetic Retinopathy Glial Abnormalities

  • Intermittent Fasting and Dry Eye Syndrome and Ocular Surface Inflammation

  • Dehydration and decreased tear production can occur while fasting, resulting in dry eye symptoms

  • Intermittent Fasting and Glaucoma

  • can successfully reduce IOP and is critical in preventing the development of glaucoma.

  • Intermittent Fasting and Other Eye diseases

  • Uveitis: Many findings indicate that intestinal flora plays a role in the development and progression of autoimmune uveitis and that IF may impact disease progression by altering the makeup of the intestinal flora.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): A low glycemic diet developed through IF may have the same impact on AMD prevention and therapy.

Refractive errors (RE): Previous research on IF and refractive error is limited, and the results are inconsistent.

These all details in just for basic information about the diseases. Please consult your doctor before following this by yourself. --- Dr Dhaval Patel (MD, AIIMS Delhi)
